Marketing Farm Products Online – How You Can Reach More Customers

Most of us have enjoyed strolls through farmer’s markets during the year.  A favorite time for many  is when local producers start to sell their fresh garden produce.  You just can’t beat the freshness and taste of garden carrots, potatoes, peas or a variety of other delicious foods.

Perishable products have a limited shelf life and unless you are a large producer, you will not be able to expand beyond your local market.  So farmer’s markets are an ideal location to sell local produce and products.

But for producers of products that are not perishable, the internet is where one can expand one’s reach exponentially.  Many of the products sold at farmers markets may have a customer base far beyond the local market.

And for this article, I will focus on products one would produce from one’s farm or acreage.  So this will not be about marketing products like the Tupperware and Watkins products you see at many Farmer’s Markets today.

Whatever product you have that you want to introduce beyond your local area, you must first do some basic research.  Some questions that should be researched are:

  • how much competition is there online?
  • are there any restrictions on shipping your product out of your local area, state or country?
  • what would average shipping costs be?
  • are there special packaging requirements to mail your product via mail or courier?
  • what is a profit price for your product? Don’t forget to include shipping costs.

So what kinds of farmer’s market products would have potential for marketing online  to reach a larger consumer base?  In reality, any product that has value is a possible candidate for online marketing.  It could be products produced from bee’s wax, clothing items made with sheep’s wool, specialty oils, or equine leather products like harnesses and saddles.  You are more likely to see equine leather products at trade shows but the same marketing methods applies here as well.

The fact that there may be competition online for whatever it is that you want to market should not stop you from pursuing your plans of expanding online.  If you take the time to learn how to market effectively online by using effective marketing strategies and techniques, you can rise above your competition.

You will need to brand yourself and your product online so a website will be essential.  If you do not have the skills or time to build a website using Dreamweaver or Frontpage, there are some excellent do-it-yourself web builders like the popular Homestead or Citymax builders.  They can even build you a 5 page website  for a much lower price than many designers will quote you.  Do not go out and spend thousands on building your initial website.  Once you have found that your online business is expanding, then you can spend more on designing your site.

To learn how to market your farm products effectively online, you will need an online mentoring and training program to help you achieve success.  You are severely limiting your business growth if you do not learn to market online.
